what? pluto isn’t a planet anymore?!

where the hell have i been? pluto was demoted from being the 9th planet in 2006, but no one told me! the more you know…

let me start by saying that i know you can get a cake *anywhere*. i also understand that you can go to the grocery store and buy a cake for under $20. these 2 facts are why i’m grateful to have such wonderful people in my life who are willing to take a chance on me and my baked goods! hopefully the quality is better so they also don’t mind paying more for said baked goods. and thanks again, senor facebook. you’ve been responsible for most of my oven lovin’ business. way to keep me connected!

i haven’t seen chrisie w. since i left pc/computing magazine (we’re talking 11 years here, people!), but we became facebook friends earlier this year. she’s been following my blog and asked me to make a cake for her daughter’s 8th birthday. i was delighted! her mom’s birthday was in the same weekend, so we decided i’d make her mom’s cake, too. a couple of weeks later, she emailed to ask if i’d make 4 dozen shortbread cookies for her daughter’s class in addition to the cakes. ummmm, YES!

sophia is into the planets, so i made her a solar system cake! she likes vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, so that’s what i did. this is a 1/4 sheet that’s 4 layers high. it was pretty hefty for a 1/4 sheet!

and here’s my shout out to “dwarf planet” pluto on the board!

i mixed up little bowls of colored frosting and had fun designing my own planets. :)

then it was on to grandma’s cake. turns out chrisie’s mom loves chocolate, so i made her an 8” chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. i ended up making more roses under these 3, as my writing wasn’t centered and i had extra room. silly me forgot to take a photo of the final version of the cake! i’m considering using a different buttercream recipe next time, as the itailan buttercream isn’t very thick and doesn’t make very good roses — they look droopy! i like how this frosting is so light and buttery, but it doesn’t work for all decorating purposes.

the best part of making these 2 cakes? i got to see an old pal! chrisie picked up the cakes and cookies saturday morning, so we had a chance to chat for a while. turns out she and another pcc buddy live 20 minutes from me, so i hope we’ll be able to get together in the near future. we even discussed trying to get together a pcc reunion. how fun would that be? :D
